A team of South African doctors said it had succeeded for the first transplant of a penis , three months after the operation.

“I am privileged to have participated in this first successful transplant in the world,” said Professor Frank Graewe, head of the department of surgery reconstructive University of Stellenbosch (South West).

Amputee there three years

The South African patient of 21 years, after three months, has recovered all the urinary and reproductive functions of his body, said the professor. He had been amputated three years ago after a infection following circumcision performed poorly during a traditional African ceremony.

The young man was operated on Cape Tygerberg Hospital for nine hours on 11 December. The penis was taken from a deceased donor, including the medical team thanked the family.

“We proved that it was possible. We can give someone a body as good as the one he had, “said the professor Graewe in a statement.

Another transplant penis had already been practiced in China in 2006. But despite the success of the surgical operation, the organ had to be removed because of “patient’s psychological problems.”
